Baby Beehinds wool cloth diaper covers are a big hit in our house. These soft, durable covers are a wonderful, breathable alternative for keeping baby dry and comfortable. Baby Beehinds sent us a green medium sized cover first, since I had let them know that Eva was in the medium size weight range. At 20 pounds, she is already 30 inches tall and has a longer rise than average for her weight. So, we did not get as good a fit with the medium as I would like.
The Baby Beehinds covers are intended to be low rise, but they were so low that they did not cover most of her diapers. The medium did work well over prefolds and over Drybees Gone Natural (a very low rise diaper on her now!). They quickly sent us a cute purple large size cover. This has turned out to be a perfect fit over any diaper, even with the higher rise diapers. These are a wide cover, so there is lots of room underneath for even the fluffiest of night time diapers.
One weekend I alternated between the two covers for the entire weekend, using a variety of fitted and prefold diapers underneath. They held up nicely to heavy use and there is still no pilling after a month of steady use. The fabric fluffed some after the first couple of washings, so they look like a soft felt now.
The fasteners are a low-tooth hook tape, similar to that found on gDiapers or GroBaby diapers. This means very little snagging of anything they might touch by accident. They have a very strong hold.
The leg openings are snug-fitting. Since the covers are made with a thick, woven wool, they do not have much stretch to them. This can make them a little bulky under clothes, but they are so bullet-proof I don’t mind at all. They absorb a ton of moisture before feeling damp, since there is a second layer in the wetness zone. The binding on the edges and around the legs is a soft, ribbed wool.
I have washed these covers several times, since they have occasionally gotten messy – or just needed washing after a weekend of solid use. The bright colors have stayed bright and have not bled at all with most wool washes I tried. The only exception was when I washed the purple one with Northern Essence Butterfly Kisses wool wash bar (this is an older one from when they still used a soap base instead of making handmade soap – have not tried their new wool wash bars yet). That bar made the wool bleed a little into the wash water, but it did not fade. There has been no color transfer onto any of her diapers.
I really like these covers and would love to have a stash of just fitted diapers and wool covers. You can buy Baby Beehinds at www.globalenfant.com
